At first blush

That is the idiom used when something is considered, experienced or seen for the first time, often as a glimpse or momentary reveal. I have enjoyed the writing process so much; I am determined to write another book, although I don’t have anymore stories of my own to write about. So, I will be venturing into the enormous landscape of fiction, which is why I want to create the best first impression with my first manuscript.

During the summer months, I sent the initial draft away for a manuscript reading, which is a detailed evaluation of the content & technique. The anonymous reader provided a comprehensive 4-page report with feedback on the writing quality and offered suggestions for further development. This was an amazing experience, and I felt my efforts had been validated! I followed the report’s advice during the fall and winter, adjusting the manuscript as needed while still keeping my style.

“Wow, what an amazing story! Your manuscript exemplifies the spirit of memoir blended with practical adventure and intimate reflection.”

“The result is a strong “quest” structure: adventure and the evolution of your partnership are at the centre.”

“Your manuscript is exciting and interesting, and definitely worth working on.”

While speaking with a few editors last month, I learned about the different types of edits, as well as how and when they could be applied to my work. With all the info I needed, I hired an editor for a structural edit, planning to complete it in over a month.

This edit will focus on the larger picture and evaluate both the shape and content of my work, especially the sequence and progression of ideas, in addition to the removal of repetition or redundancies. With these comments and recommendations, I will implement the changes where they make sense, before sending it off for the next round of edits. Line and copy editing will take another couple weeks to tighten sentence structure, focusing on wording for clarity, as well as grammar, punctuation and spelling.

My enthusiasm for publishing this book is tempered by the anticipation of the deeper sense of pride I’ll feel when I release the best possible first blush as a new author.
